Belgium: the live status of the Belgian electricity grid
Belgium runs a compact, nuclear-anchored grid operated by Elia, sitting at the crossroads of France, the Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain's interconnected electricity markets. Nuclear power - long slated for a full phase-out - was given a reprieve in the mid-2020s as two reactors had their lifetimes extended to shore up supply, and North Sea offshore wind has grown into a major second pillar of the mix. Belgium connects to Great Britain through Nemo Link, a subsea interconnector to Richborough in Kent. About the Belgium grid
Elia operates Belgium's transmission grid, part of the Continental Europe synchronous area. Belgium built out seven nuclear reactors across two sites - Doel and Tihange - from the 1970s onward, and nuclear has anchored the country's generation ever since. A law passed in 2003 mandated a full phase-out by 2025, but the 2021-2023 European energy crisis prompted a reversal: Doel 4 and Tihange 3 had their lifetimes extended by a decade, keeping nuclear as Belgium's single largest generation source into the 2030s.
Offshore wind in the Belgian North Sea - a relatively small but densely-developed zone - has grown into a major second pillar, supplemented by onshore wind and a fast-growing solar fleet. Nemo Link, opened in 2019, gives Belgium a direct electrical link to Great Britain, complementing its existing links to France and the Netherlands and letting it trade flexibly across all of north-west Europe's coupled markets.

The Elexon Insights Solution, NESO Data Portal and Carbon Intensity API that power the Great Britain pages are GB-specific and don't cover Belgium, so this page draws on a different source instead:
- ENTSO-E Transparency Platform - the pan-European grid data hub, required by EU regulation for every connected TSO (RTE included) to publish to. Powers demand, generation, day-ahead price, the generation mix, the 24-hour mix chart and the History section above, all via Belgium's own bidding zone. Requires the site operator's own free API token, obtained through a short registration process - shows "not enough recorded history yet" rather than a placeholder figure if one isn't set or ingestion hasn't run yet.
Two figures aren't shown on this page at all: ENTSO-E doesn't publish emissions intensity, and its generation-per-type data doesn't include cross-border physical flow per interconnector (Nemo Link), so rather than show a permanently illustrative placeholder for either, they're left out until a real source exists.
