Canada: the live status of Ontario's electricity grid
Canada doesn't run one national grid - each province operates its own system, several synchronised with the US Eastern or Western Interconnections rather than with each other. This page covers Ontario only, run by the IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator), which publishes a fully public, keyless real-time feed - the only Canadian jurisdiction found to do so during research for this page. Demand and generation mix below are live from IESO. Wholesale price, emissions and interchange/transfers aren't available from this source and are shown as not available rather than a placeholder. About Ontario's grid, and why this page isn't "Canada"
Canada has no single national grid or national system operator - power is a provincial responsibility, and each province runs its own system. Several are synchronised with neighbouring US interconnections (Ontario and most of the rest of Canada sit inside the Eastern Interconnection, British Columbia inside the Western Interconnection, and Quebec runs its own separate asynchronous grid tied to the rest of North America only via HVDC links) rather than with each other directly.
Ontario's system operator, the IESO, publishes a genuinely public, keyless, machine-readable set of real-time and historical reports - covering demand and generation by fuel type - which is what powers this page. Ontario's own generation mix is unusual for North America: nuclear typically supplies the largest single share, complemented by hydro, with a small and shrinking role for gas and very little coal (phased out entirely in 2014) or oil.
Other provinces - Quebec (heavily hydro), British Columbia (heavily hydro), Alberta (gas and a fast-growing wind/solar fleet, with its own competitive market and a free-but-registered API) and the rest - aren't covered here. Adding them would need separate research and ingestion work per operator, since Canada has no equivalent of the EIA or ENTSO-E to query once for the whole country.

Data sources for Canada
The Elexon Insights Solution, NESO Data Portal and Carbon Intensity API that power the Great Britain pages are GB-specific and don't cover Canada at all - and unlike GB, Ireland or the EU, there's no single Canadian source to point a live feed at either. This page uses one source only: IESO's public report repository, which powers demand, generation and the generation mix (including the 24-hour stack and this page's History section) above and below - Ontario only.
Why it's limited, and why this page deliberately sticks to that one source:
- Ontario only, not all of Canada. IESO is Ontario's system operator; it has no visibility into, and doesn't publish data for, any other province. See the "About" section above for why the rest of Canada isn't covered yet.
- No wholesale price shown. IESO does publish Ontario market prices, but in a more complex shape (multiple pricing mechanisms following recent market reforms) that this install doesn't currently parse - rather than show a number that might be measuring the wrong thing, the price stat and its History panel are marked "not available".
- No emissions figure. IESO doesn't publish a carbon-intensity number in its public reports, so emissions is also marked "not available" rather than estimated.
- No transfers figure yet. IESO does publish an interchange/intertie schedule report, but it isn't wired into this install yet - marked "not available" rather than guessed at.
- History depth builds up over time. IESO's "most recent" report aliases only ever contain a rolling recent window, not a deep archive - unlike GB's decade-plus of stored history, Canada's History section here only covers however long this install has actually been polling IESO for.
